We even learn stuff here! As I told you in my last entry, my mother has become concerned about my life here at MIT. I mentioned awhile ago that by now, basically my entire extended family reads this blog. Hello, family! Obviously my mother is included in the term extended family, and she thinks its great that Im doing so many awesome things, like watching April paint the room (just kidding! I did my share of the work! Promise!) and taking pictures of LEGOs. But do I actually do any work? The answer, surprisingly, is yes. I am enrolled in 4 classes and one seminar this semester, so lets talk about them. First theres 18.01 (Calc I), and I have nothing interesting to say about it. Not to burst anyones bubble about MIT or anything- because it is an insanely awesome/amazing/fantastic place. But it is still a school, and you still have to go to classes, and I still dont really like math so much. (I am also still an MIT student, so I was really excited when, while working on the first problem set, I had a lightbulb moment on Part II, problem 2b.) But hey! Please dont worry about that! This is just me talking here. Go find someone else who adores/adored 18.01. Im not being sarcastic when I say that Im sure there are plenty of them. =) Personally though, Im just going to skip right along to. 7.012, which is the introductory level biology class taught by the famous Eric Lander, who did so much work on the Human Genome Project that Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people of our time. Thats pretty cool. Anyway, this is just a basic, introductory level bio class with a focus on (what else?) genetics. What I really want to talk about though, is 3.091, or, as some like to call it, 3.09-fun. Clever, isnt it? (By the way, heres a general rule to pronouncing MIT numbers: the number before the decimal point should be read as one word, i.e. 18 is eighteen not one eight. Numbers after the decimal do not follow any remotely logical rule or pattern. 7.012 is seven oh one two, but 5.111 is five eleven one and not five one one one or five one hundred eleven or, God forbid, five one eleven. Anyway, the point is that 3.091 is pronounced three oh nine one, which conveniently allows for the cute little pun three oh nine FUN.) Anyway, heres whats cool about 3.091: music. No, seriously. A couple of weeks ago there was music playing as we walked into lecture. After teaching us some history about how Mendeleev worked out the ideas behind the periodic table, Professor Sadoway, one of the craziest and most entertaining lecturers to grace the front of 10-250, Im sure, explained to us the significance of the music. Were were listening to songs composed by Alexander Borodin. Borodin was a chemist by day and a musician by night who also happened to be good buddies with Mendeleev. (See? You can go to MIT and still be a rockstar!) Along with the music theme, we listened to the periodic table song. Professor Sadoway proceeded to tell us about the discovery of the element administratium and tell a joke that began with So a neutron walks into a bar (do I even really need to finish?) before dismissing us for the day. Damnation Of Theron Ware The real issues in the damnation of Theron ware are not issues of religion, but rather cultural issues. Although the book is outwardly a novel about religion, the question becomes not whether god exists, but how we should live. Theron becomes damned in the novel because of what he is. Theron cannot be anymore than what he is, a simple Methodist minister, yet when he is shown another way of life, he wants to enter. The problems that Theron is having in the novel reflect questions that people were having on religious issues at the time. There is at this point, a conflict between traditional beliefs, such as Methodism, and new ideas. Each of the old beliefs and new ideas take form in this novel through on of the characters, and it is through character development, especially Theron's, that we see the conflict being argued out and solved. Though Theron is the minister, throughout the book he is shown as wanting something more. Even in the first scene in which we meet him, he is wishing that he had received a better position in the church, perhaps a better appointment in a city, rather than a rural town. It appears to me that the conflict within Theron is a conflict of the old ways verses a modern life. The city symbolizes the new and the free, while the rural town, in which Theron is stuck, symbolizes the traditional beliefs. Just as, for most of the novel, Theron is stuck in the rural town, he is also stuck within his beliefs. Though he wants more, it is impossible. Theron tries to enter another way of life, which is shown to him by Celia, father Forbes, and dr. Ledsmar, but when he attempts to enter this world that they exist in, he is considered a "bore." In other words, Theron would appear to be in a no-win situation. Just as Theron is stuck in this no-win situation, it would appear that the Methodist church is stuck in it, as well. It is apparent that some of the younger members of the church would like change, however, they are unable, for various reasons, to affect it. Although culture seems to be moving ahead at full force, the church seems to be stuck in the past. The differences between the catholic and the Methodist church can reveal this. The Catholic Church has organ music, has play, and has drinking, as is seen at the catholic picnic being held at the same time as the Methodist camp. Theron, like society, however, does not want to five up his religion to enter a new life, but instead he wants to incorporate the two. This eventually leads to Theron's breakdown and near death experience at the end of the novel. At the opposite pole of Theron stand Dr. Ledsmar and father Forbes. These two men seem to represent a new society, advanced science and religion that reflect the changing and advancing world in which they live. In each generation, one of the Trask brothers is moral and good while the other brother behaves badly and immorally, already we see how the Trask family parallels â€Å"Genesis. † Because the good Trask brothers are favored, the bad Trask brothers develop envious tendencies and a recurrent theme of sibling rivalry appears throughout the book. The first generation of Trask brothers, Charles and Adam, follow the Cain and Abel biblical model from the very beginning. â€Å".. it’s awful not to be loved. It’s the worst thing in the world†¦ t makes you mean, and violent, and cruel. † (Steinbeck 347). This quote epitomizes the root of all evil in the Trask generations- lack of recognition to one of the sons. When their deadbeat father Cyrus favors Adam’s birthday gift of a puppy over Charles’ expensive knife, Charles nearly beats Adam to death. Although Charles does not kill Adam, he is a clear allusion to Cain. While Adam wanders the Earth in the army, it is Charles who remains on the farm, where like Cain, he becomes marked with a dark brown scar. Adam therefor, is reflected as Abel. â€Å"Humans are caught†in their lives, in their thoughts, in their hungers and ambitions, in their avarice and cruelty, and in their kindness and generosity too†in a net of good and evil. † (127). This quote is a clear representation of the Adam and Charles relationship throughout the novel. The incident that occurred over a simple birthday gift sparked a Jealous rage that caused Charles and Adam to remain at odds with each other throughout their entire lives despite their love for each other. The next generation of Trask brothers, the dark haired Cal and fair-haired Aaron, also carry out the dynamics of the Cain and Abel tale. Cal’s Jealousy towards Aron is due to the favoritism that Aron receives from their father Adam; this is especially seen through an episode that resulted in Aarons death. For some reason, Adam favors Aron over Cal and when Cal offers his father a birthday present of $1 5,000 to help him recover his financial losses, Adam scorns him for making the money during a war-time economy. In a rage, Cal takes his brother to isit the notorious prostitute that birthed the two boys. Emotionally traumatized, Aaron runs away to the army during World War l, and dies soon after. Cal lies to Adam when asked about ‘Aaron’s whereabouts. â€Å"Where is he? † â€Å"How do I know? † said Cal. â€Å"Am I supposed to look after him? (p. 562). This sequence between Cal and Adam portrays the emotional barrier between the two that seems to bring out the untruthfulness in Cal that reflects his ancient parallel, Cain. Thus, the biblical tale plays out with Cal, although inadvertently, killing his brother. It might be the most important word in the world. That says the way is open. That throws it right back on a the concept of timshel. While psychologically shattered Adam reminisces over Cathy, Lee and Samuel share philosophical discussions over the ancient Hebrew word â€Å"timshel. † Timshel defies the pattern in the Cain and Abel tale, rather than condemning the less favored brother to a life of sin it pursues the issue of free will and grants Cal the strength to depart from the inherently bound evil motives that ossessed him at an early age.
